FED:Oakeshott rejects poor poll results

CANBERRA, Aug 25 AAP - Key crossbench MP Rob Oakeshott has rejected a local newspaper
poll that suggests his support is plummeting, arguing the editor is an employee of the
federal coalition.

The Port Paper in Port Macquarie ran an exclusive poll this week, which stated that
Mr Oakeshott's primary vote had fallen from 47 per cent in August 2010 to just 14.8 per
cent as of Tuesday.

The three-question survey took in the views of 448 residents in Mr Oakeshott's electorate
of Lyne.

Mr Oakeshott's response on Thursday was brief.

"The editor of The Port Paper is still on the Australian parliamentary staff list as
an employee of the National Party's Luke Hartsuyker," he said in a statement.

"Accordingly, along with referrals to the New South Wales Electoral Commission and
the Press Council, anything written by this paper, which only began in March 2011, will
not attract a response from my office."

TOOWOOMBA, April 23 AAP - The ash cloud which has crippled airlines operating out of
Europe will be part of the Reserve Bank board's deliberations next month, RBA Governor
Glenn Stevens says.

Flights are slowly returning to normal a week after Iceland's volcanic eruption forced
airport shutdowns across Europe.

Addressing a business forum in the southern Queensland city of Toowoomba on Friday,
Mr Stevens said the ash would not only impact on travel but also just-in-time inventory
management for some firms.

He said that to this point it had not affected prices for grain, but big volcanic events
could affect crop yields.

"It's too soon to know," Mr Stevens said.

NSW: Streamlined executive to put more NSW police on front line

By Simon Kirby, Police Reporter

SYDNEY, Dec 10 AAP - An overhaul of the NSW police executive will streamline work processes,
resulting in more officers for frontline duties and stronger community ties, Commissioner
Andrew Scipione says.

Among changes announced by Mr Scipione today is the abolition of the Commissioner's
Inspectorate, with its functions to be split between two deputy commissioners and the
executive director of corporate services.

"We will be taking a number of those positions that were in the Commissioner's Inspectorate
and pushing them back to field operations, which is where most of our interactions happen,"

Mr Scipione told reporters.

"It means we are closer to the front line, to the community, we can listen and respond
quicker and that's certainly been one of my primary goals."

The Commissioner's Inspectorate includes a number of administrative and specialist
units, including Aboriginal coordination and cultural diversity teams and the schools
response unit.

New assistant commissioners will also be appointed to head several specialised commands,
including State Crime Command, Counter-Terrorism and Special Tactics.

The officers currently in those roles are considering offers of positions at senior
command level.

"It's about new ideas, it's about moving people into roles where they can bring the
whole lot of experience they have into play," Mr Scipione said.

"This is about revitalisation and renewal of the force - a new team needs to be put into place."

Other changes include the establishment of police prosecutors as a stand-alone branch
under Specialist Operations Command.

Mr Scipione said the changes were part of a process for renewal that he had been working
on since assuming the top job three months ago.

"Since I took office in September, my focus has been on ways we can best deliver services,
both for community and police," Mr Scipione.

"What this change will achieve will be reduction in duplication and, in places, allow
for uniformed officers to return to positions in the field."

Mr Scipione said he would know exactly how many police will return to frontline positions
by early February, when the changes come into effect, but he admitted it would not be
a huge number.

"I don't think this is about returning hundreds and hundreds of police onto the streets,"

Mr Scipione told reporters in Sydney.

"It's more about getting our business house in order and that is a benefit."

Mr Scipione said the catalyst for the changes was the government's State Plan, which
is one year old today.

Police Minister David Campbell said the overhaul would modernise the management structure
of the force.

"(It is also) a means of ensuring a continued focus on locking up crooks, supporting
victims and of course of making sure there's high-profile front line police," Mr Campbell
said.

Fed: Skipper's heartbreak as Tasman claims Koomooloo

By Paul Mulvey

SYDNEY, Dec 27 AAP - Skipper Mike Freebairn choked back tears as he abandoned the yacht
his family had spent a decade restoring, only to give it up to the wild seas of the Tasman
today.

Freebairn and his seven crewmates on board the 38-year-old timber yacht Koomooloo were
rescued by fellow Sydney to Hobart competitor Adventure today as it was taking on water
after falling off the back of a huge wave 60 miles off the NSW south coast.

He said the crew ripped up nearly every floorboard of the 1968 Sydney to Hobart winner
but could not find the leak and had no option but to abandon ship.

"We did everything we could to keep it afloat. The last sighting it was afloat, but
we expect it to sink," Freebairn said by phone to race organisers at the Cruising Yacht
Club of Australia in Sydney moments after being rescued.

"We're all pretty devastated. Standing on the boat looking around, it's been pretty
hard to believe.

"We took on a lot of water, we were bailing but we had to make the decision for the
safety of the crew to abandon.

"We've had the boat 10 years and it's got a pretty big history. We thought it was pretty solid.

"But everyone's safe and well, the boys did an awesome job transferring by liferaft."

British entrant Adventure answered a Mayday call at around 9am (AEDT) today and changed
course to reach Koomooloo and transfer its crew by liferaft in treacherous seas.

A police launch from Bateman's Bay picked up the crew off Adventure this afternoon
and took them to Eden on the south coast.

The Freebairn family had lovingly restored every nut and bolt on Koomooloo since buying
it a decade ago.

The 41-footer was actually leading the race on handicap, in its 10th Sydney to Hobart,
when the seas took control this morning.

Freebairn said the southerly winds which gusted up to 28 knots were not uncomfortable,
but they had whipped up seas of up to six metres.

The crew tried to find calmer waters closer to shore, but the Queenslander said they
were too far out.

After punching through one wave, Koomooloo was left with a massive drop, thumping back
into the water with a force which eventually sunk the boat in inaccessible deep seas.

"It's tragic, she's a beautiful old boat," CYCA Commodore Geoff Lavis said.

"It's off the continental shelf there, that's a long way down."

Koomooloo is the eighth boat to withdraw from the race in heavy seas, but Lavis said
conditions were nowhere near as bad as the tragic 1998 race in which six yachtsmen were
killed and five boats sank.

The eight yachts that have now pulled out of the race include maxis ABN Amro and Maximus
who lost their masts in big seas while leading the race.

Tri-Vision International Ltd./Ltee - V-Chip and Entertainment Violence to Receive Higher Profile As Democratic Convention Opens in Entertainment Capital.

Business Editors

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2000

V-Chip Champion Chosen as Gore Vice Presidential Running Mate

Tri-Vision International Ltd./Ltee (TSE:TVL.) welcomes the high profile that will likely be given both the v-chip technology and entertainment violence flowing from the recent appointment of Senator Joseph Lieberman, the co-author of the U.S. v-chip law (New Telecommunications Act of 1996), as Vice Presidential running mate to Al Gore and from the Democratic Convention now underway in Los Angeles. The convention should draw the v-chip back into the spotlight along with further discussions about television violence and the ratings system.

The Democrats have outlined their position in public presentations stating, "parents and the entertainment industry must accept more responsibility. Many parents are not aware of the resources available to them, such as the V-chip technology in television sets and Internet filtering devices that can help them shield children from violent entertainment. The entertainment industry must accept more responsibility and exercise more self-restraint, by strictly enforcing movie ratings, by taking a close look at violence in its own advertising, and by determining whether the ratings systems are allowing too many children to be exposed to too much violence and cruelty." These positions are expected to surface again during the present Democratic Convention.

"The tone of the current Democratic Convention provides further confirmation of the commitment that senior U.S. political leaders have to the v-chip and to ensuring that children are protected from offensive and harmful programs on television," stated Tri-Vision President & CEO, Najmul Siddiqui. "We are delighted to see that both political parties in the U.S. continue to support the v-chip initiative and are committed to providing this very important tool to families across the country."

Vice President Al Gore has long been a proponent of the v-chip and has clearly made the v-chip a prominent part of his election platform. In September 1997, v-chip inventor and Tri-Vision Director Tim Collings was a guest of Al Gore for a news conference in the White House to unveil the TV program ratings and demonstrate Tri-Vision's patented V-gis(TM) v-chip technology. "Joe Lieberman represents a new guard of leadership," said one Gore source. "Senator Lieberman has a national reputation of integrity and independence. Lieberman and Gore share the same values."

In a media statement made July 21, 1999 surrounding violence on television, Senator Lieberman described American parents as "deeply worried about their children's exposure to an increasingly toxic popular culture," and his appeal to the American entertainment industry acknowledged parents' "responsibility for shielding their own children" from harmful media exposure.

"Senator Lieberman's integrity and independence added considerable strength to the v-chip cause and we expect that, if successful in the Presidential election, the Democrats will further the cause of the v-chip and the need to ensure that parents have full control over what their children are exposed to on television," stated Tim Collings, inventor of Tri-Vision's unique, field-upgradeable V-gis(TM) v-chip technology. "Having listened to Senator Lieberman position and seen his actions during the formative days of the U.S. legislation, I found him to be truly committed to the v-chip law in its totality. We anticipate considerable attention to the v-chip and television violence issues with the current Democratic Convention underway in Los Angeles now," Collings added.
