Fed: Dodson praises Fraser call for bill of rights = 2

Mr Dodson called on Liberal MPs not to toe the party line laid down by Prime Minister
John Howard.

"I'd be surprised if there wasn't (a division). I think we're foolish if we think they're
all unified behind what Mr Howard's got to say," he said.

"Take courage, step out into the deep here.

"Actually, seek to have a reconciled Australia based on some new thinking rather than
regurgitation of the outmoded thoughts that were relevant 20, 30 years ago."

Mr Dodson urged Australians not to fear a treaty with indigenous people because it
was not a threat to the country's sovereignty.

"We're not talking about some separatist, apartheid nation-within-nations arrangement," he said.

"We've just got to begin to debate and consider how this can be better improved."

An inquiry has heard chief steward of the New South Wales greyhound racing industry
is at the centre of a corruption scandal.

Counsel assisting the Independent Commission Against Corruption has compared the dog
substitution racket to the notorious 1984 Fine Cotton Affair in which the horse Bold Personality
was substituted for Fine Cotton.

Chief Steward RODNEY WAYNE POTTER also allegedly tampered with dog urine samples.

Counsel assisting, STEPHEN RUSHTON, has told Commissioner IRENE MOSS she'll hear evidence
of how Mr POTTER had a corrupt relationship with many dog trainers over many years.

He said evidence will be heard that Mr POTTER also interfered with the drug testing ballot.

Mr RUSHTON said the commission would hear how Mr POTTER pressured other stewards to
reduce penalties for various trainers and owners.

He said despite the Greyhound Racing Authority had failed dismally in its mandate to
maintain a clean and drug free industry.

been given a reprieve by the national air traffic control organisation, Airservices Australia.

Airservices says it will extend payment times on accounts and won't charge any interest.

A Northern Territory pub famous for never closing its doors is set to do just that in the
name of cutting down alcohol abuse among local aborigines.

A group of 16 local Aboriginal communities have bought the Timber Creek Wayside Inn for
$1.5 million and will introduce 12-hour trading times to cut drinking-related problems.

Association coordinator ROBERT KNIGHT says the pub has not closed in 10 years, not even
having doors to physically close, meaning they had to be made by local carpenters.

Mr KNIGHT says cutting back grog sales is the least stringent of the new rules, with
drinkers banned if they carry weapons, don't send children to school or refuse to pay bills.

The $1.5 million purchase also bought a stake in the town's two supermarkets, a caravan
park, a restaurant, a service station and motel units, providing Aboriginal job opportunities.

MELBOURNE, April 2 AAP - An elderly woman from northern Victoria was today charged with
trafficking and possessing marijuana, Victorian police said.

Spokeswoman Senior Constable Michelle Fisher said Katherine Margaret Forde, 68 of Benalla,
was granted bail at an out-of-sessions hearing and was ordered to appear at Benalla
Magistrates' Court on May 4.

Ms Forde was charged with one count of trafficking a drug of dependence, one count of
possessing a drug of dependence and one count of unlawful possession, she said.

SYDNEY, Feb 24 AAP - A man and two elderly women have been seriously hurt after a crash
in southern NSW

A car was turning right from Roberts Avenue into Shellharbour Road at Barrack Heights
just past 10.30am (AEDT) on Wednesday.

At this time the car collided with a Nissan utility travelling north along Shellharbour Road.

Due to the impact the car was pushed toward a gutter and the ute struck a power pole.

The driver of the car, a 73-year-old woman, was trapped for a period of time before being freed.
