Fed: HIA welcomes news of home affordability inquiry
The Housing Industry Association has welcomed news that an inquiry will be called todayinto first home ownership.
HIA managing director RON SILBERBERG says they'd welcome comprehensive inquiry intorising housing costs and falling affordability.
And he says a probe by the Productivity Commission is the best way to get to the bottomof the housing affordability crisis.
Earlier this week, a Commonwealth Bank-HIA report found housing affordability was atits lowest level since 1990.
A Housing Industry Association report has found that more than 20 different taxes areapplied by the three levels of government.
They include stamp duties paid by developers and consumers, numerous levies used tofund urban infrastructure, and GST charged on the final price.
The HIA says many of the taxes are levied several times on the one property, but mosthomebuyers are unaware of them.
