NSW: Gay hate crime motives traced to society's masculine values
SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - Gang murders of homosexuals are mostly carried out by disadvantagedyoung males who act out their crimes to protect society's anti-gay attitudes, accordingto a new report.
Dr Stephen Tomsen (Tomsen) from the Australian Institute of Criminology today publisheda study of 74 gay murders in NSW over the past 20 years.
The research reveals a pattern of brutal bashings of complete strangers in public placesand another scenario where the perpetrator knows the victim but attacks him in retaliationto an alleged sexual advance.
Dr Tomsen said the motives for such hate crimes were complex but there was a commonlink in that gay bashers appeared to be acting on anti-gay attitudes imposed on them bymainstream society in an attempt to secure their own masculinity.
"Perpetrators are also preoccupied with attaining a heightened male status for themselvesand with policing the acceptable patterns of public male sexual identity," the reportconcludes.
"It is also worth noting that these perpetrators are overwhelmingly young and relativelypowerless men who have acted out anti-homosexual attitudes and masculinist values instilledin them by the wider society."
The study contains a detailed analysis of the social background of victims and perpetratorsas well as 12 case studies.
